Recent Android Auto updates appear to be causing problems with Google Assistant for some users, with “oops, something went wrong” error messages whenever a voice command is attempted.

Voice commands are fundamental to any infotainment experience, and Android Auto greatly improves on most native car systems by using Google Assistant. So you can start calls, control music, set destinations and much more. So when it’s not working, it’s obviously a big problem.

For some Android Auto users, that’s exactly what’s happening right now. All because recent updates seem to have broken the Assistant.

When trying to activate the Google Assistant in the car, Android Auto displays an error that says “oops, something went wrong”. This happens even before any voice commands have been issued. There are dozens of reports of this issue in various threads on the Google support forums and there does not appear to be a clear solution available.

The potential cause is not very clear. However from the available reports, It appears to be the Android Auto 11.1 update or, more likely, a recent Google app update. Reports started coming in at the end of January. In any case, the problem is not affecting all users, but it is not exactly uncommon either.

Some possible troubleshooting measures may include checking for updates to your applications on the Play Store, sideloading a new beta version of Android Auto, or rolling back app versions by uninstalling updates. But, most likely, this will be a problem that will be resolved in the next few days.

Ironically, this is happening right after Google released a major visual update to the Assistant in Android Auto. However, it is highly unlikely that the new design has anything to do with this error.
