HBO Max is preparing to turn “Harry Potter” into a series. What state is the process in? And what will be the main challenges in adaptation?

In April last year, the Warner Bros. made people talk when announcing that “Harry Potter” would return, but now in a series to the HBO Max. The announcement stated the intention to adapt the seven books in J.K. Rowlingin a more faithful and dedicated way, speaking about a process that would last 10 consecutive years.

Since then, we haven’t had many more updates, apart from speculation about who could join the cast from the series.

So far, HBO Max continues to look for a creative force to take the reins of the series. Among the names called to present their vision are Martha Hillier (“The Last Kingdom”), Kathleen Jordan (“Teenage Bounty Hunters”), Tom Moran (“The Devil’s Hour”) and Michael Lesslie (screenwriter for “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Birds and Serpents”).

According to deadlinethe platform used a mix of British and American people with experience in the field of science fiction and those who stand out will move on to the next round where they will possibly meet with Rowling herself.

The author of the original books will assume roles as executive producer and her vision and contribution will be valued, according to what she says Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content. Bloys also declined to comment on the controversies surrounding JK Rowling, “Our priority is what’s on the screen… Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirming and positive and is about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority – what’s on the screen.”

With regards to the casting This is where we find perhaps one of the greatest challenges that HBO Max will have to face. Not only the original cast made up of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and dozens of British veterans has become iconic, as the requirement of the project makes everything more complicated.

Since the intention of platform is that the undertaking lasts 10 years, this assumes that the actors will have to commit to that long period from the beginning. Something that is not that attractive for many names and that can make it difficult to hire stars.

In statements to Variety, the chairman of Warner Bros. TV Group Channing Dungey stated that “The first step for us is to find out who will be the showrunner and once we achieve that, we can start to have these conversations [do elenco]. The tricky part is the first two books, where the children are younger, around 11 or 12.”

Dungey reinforced that “We are in conversations with several different writers to find out who will be the person to lead this saga for us.”

And you, who would you like to see in the cast of the “Harry Potter” series on HBO Max?
