There are more “Star Wars” on the way and one of the projects will feature a woman as director for the first time.
The first film of the “Star Wars” saga, which would become one of the most culturally relevant properties not only in the science fiction genre, but in cinema as a whole. What started as a project George Lucashas already expanded its horizons, going far beyond the Skywalker family and its author’s initial vision.
Under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedywe already had the opportunity to see a new trilogy that presented a new generation of characters like Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren; the universe of “The Mandalorian” imagined by Jon Favreau and Dave Filloni; series around characters like “Obi-Wan Kenobi” or “Ador”.
Among all these projects, there was something that was missing from this universe and that will now be resolved with the announcement of a new feature film around the character Rey played by actress Daisy Ridley.
First presented in “Star Wars The Force Awakens” in JJ Abrams (“Lost”), Rey appears to us as the heroine of this generation of the saga. Sensitive to the Force, she ends up training to become a Jedi, with the help of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
In “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, it is revealed that she is the granddaughter of Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). The young woman ends up renouncing her lineage and, as the only remaining Jedi, promises to rebuild the Jedi Order.
This is the starting point of this new film, “Star Wars: New Jedi Order”, which will take place 15 years after the events shown in the aforementioned work.
At the forefront of this ambitious undertaking will be the Oscar-winning Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Saving Face”) who has also made a name for himself on television with the series “Ms. Marvel”.
Obaid-Chinoy will make her debut as a director of a fiction feature film with “Brilliance” which will feature Will Smith and will then join the “Star Wars” universe as the first woman to direct one of these films.
A CNNthe filmmaker was ““very excited about the project because I feel that what we are about to create is something very special” and argues that “it’s about time we had a woman shaping a story in this galaxy far, far away”.
“Star Wars: New Jedi Order” will feature the script of Steve Knight (“Peaky Blinders”), after Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”) abandoned the project.
It is worth remembering that in 2020 it was announced that Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) would take control of “Rogue Squandron”, however the project ended up being shelved.
