In “Poor Creatures,” Bella Baxter (Stone) is a woman resurrected with the mind of a baby who gradually discovers the complexities of the world. Free from the prejudices of her time, Bella demands equality and liberation.

Among several aspects that are attracting attention in “Poor Creatures”, there is one involving Bella dancing with the lawyer Duncan (Mark Ruffalo), after discovering what the dance is for the first time, which went viral.

For Variety, the director of photography Robbie Ryan revealed some of the secrets and told how the scene was filmed.

One of the main challenges is that it was filmed in a real building, and not in a studio like most of the rest of the film. As it is an old structure, the team had to deal with additional lighting challenges, opting to use natural light filtered through a large window in the ceiling. In this way, the windows were blocked to control the brightness of the scene.

The choice of lens was also crucial to achieving the atmosphere desired by Lanthimos, the idea of a “portal”, as if we were looking into another world.

To achieve this, the Oscar nominee used an Optex Ultra Wide 4mm f/1.8 lens, originally designed for a 16mm camera adapted to the 35mm format. This specific lens provided a vignetting effect that helped transport the audience to a peculiar universe.

“I think that in a way this contributes to the humor and the breadth of the film, because it is a very striking lens”, argues the director of photography.

To capture the scene, Ryan had to get closer to the actors, which led to Stone inadvertently kicking the camera lens during a fight scene. Lanthimos chose to keep this detail in the final version of the film, considering it an interesting addition to the scene’s authenticity.
