With the year coming to an end, it’s time to discover the best miniseries of the last 12 months.
In 2023 there were several miniseries that stood out. A little for each of the different streaming platforms – Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and AppleTV+ –, in the last twelve there are several productions of supreme quality that won over both the public and the always demanding criticism! Since dramas intense to thrillersthe 2023 miniseries attracted an audience eager for captivating and innovative stories.
These works displayed excellent quality in both the script and the protagonists. The list of the best miniseries of 2023, based on reviews from critics Rotten Tomatoes, is a celebration of artistic excellence and creativity. Each of these productions presented itself as a unique experience, exploring complex themes and presenting truly surprising twists that did not leave the audience indifferent.
8th – CHEMISTRY LESSONS – 84%
Set in the 1950s, this literary adaptation of Bonnie Garmus follows Elizabeth (Brie Larson) whose dream of becoming a scientist is put on hold by a society that considers women only to belong to the domestic sphere, not the professional sphere. Pregnant, alone and fired from the laboratory where she worked, she puts into practice the ingenuity that a single mother develops.
By accepting a job hosting a cooking show, Zott will use the platform to teach a nation of housewives – and the men who start listening to the show – about much more than recipes… while also seeking to return to her passion: science. It’s in Apple TV+.
7th – A HOMICIDE AT THE END OF THE WORLD – 88%
A production of FX that joins Science fiction and mystery, in a futuristic scenery in Iceland. The protagonist is an expert hacker who also dabbles as an amateur detective, Darby Hart (played by Emma Corrin). In the plot of this miniseries, Hart and eight other people are invited by a multimillionaire to participate in a retreat.
However, when one of the guests turns up murdered, Hart has to put his skills to use in order to solve the mystery before the killer attacks again. It’s in the Disney+.
6th – THE FALL OF THE USHER HOUSE – 90%
The plot unfolds in a scenario in which Farmacêutica Fortunato, once a modest company, was transformed into an empire of wealth, privilege and power at the expense of the ruthless brothers Roderick and Madeline Usher. However, as the story progresses, long-buried secrets begin to emerge and the heirs of the Usher dynasty begin to succumb one by one at the hands of a mysterious woman. Available at Netflix.
5th – JUSTIFIED: PRIMITIVE CITY – 91%
Eight years after leaving Kentucky, Givens is now in Miami, balancing life as a sheriff and part-time father to a 14-year-old girl. A chance encounter on a Florida highway takes him to Detroit and he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, also known as The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent sociopath who has already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and wants to do it again. . 4th – QUEEN CARLOTA: A BRIDGERTON STORY – 95%
In this period serieswhich is a spin off in “Bridgerton“, we are introduced to the wedding of Queen Charlotte and King George of England. This union triggers a love story so intense that it transforms English high society at the end of the 18th century. Viewers can follow the journey of the monarch, played by India Amarteifio, from her childhood in a German province to becoming the Queen of England, providing insight into the journey that made this possible. 3rd – TRANSATLANTIC – 95%
In 1940, Varian Fry traveled to Marseille with three thousand dollars and a list of endangered artists and writers he hoped to help escape within a few weeks. However, he ended up spending more than a year working to obtain false documents, gather emergency funds and organize trips through Spain and Portugal, where refugees would embark for safer ports.
His many clients included Hannah Arendt, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall. The race against time to save them is a story of forbidden love, high-stakes adventure and unimaginable courage. 2nd – I’M A VIRGO – 96%
A comedy about Cootie, a 10-foot-tall young black man who lives in Okland, California. Having grown up away from the world, spending time reading comics and series, he escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world. You can see in Prime Video.
It’s time to meet the big winner! This miniseries follows the aftermath of a traffic argument between two strangers. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a contractor on canvas and angry at the world, faces Amy Lau (Ali Wong), an entrepreneur in her own right with an idyllic life. In this black comedy series from Netflix Deeply moving, the intensity of the conflict between the two devastates their lives and personal relationships.
