The Walking Dead’s best-kept mystery revealed

“The Walking Dead” is one of the most successful series of recent times and tried to keep as much as possible a key production mystery that has now been revealed.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the characters try to fight to survive the undead that infest the United States of America (and beyond), while at the same time trying to rebuild a life with some stability. Premiering in 2010the series broadcast in Portugal on the channel FOX achieved enormous success throughout its eleven seasons but it has always been based on a real mystery – ‘what is the origin of the zombie apocalypse?”.

In the first episode of the series, Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) is an Atlanta police officer who ends up being shot during a chase after a getaway car. Later, Rick wakes up from his coma but finds the hospital empty and completely vandalized, with strange messages written on the walls. When he goes out into the street, all he finds are dead people who come back to life in zombie form and he is forced to fight to survive and find his family.

Interestingly, although the broadcast of the series created by Frank Darabont lasted more than a decade, the producers never revealed the origin of the virus that led to the apocalypse, a mystery also kept in the comics. However, the secrecy may have come to an end after a post-credits scene revealed at the end of the second season of “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”, a sequel to the franchise. According to the images shown, it all started in a laboratory located in France, and the scene shows a researcher returning to his workplace to try to find a cure for the virus. Interestingly, on the walls of the laboratory a phrase is visible that mentions ‘Les Morts Sont Nés Ici‘ – ‘The Dead Were Born Here’.



THE SEQUELS OF A UNIVERSE WITH THE LIVING DEAD

The FOX series won over thousands of fans from all over the world due to its original script, but also because it was based on many other mysteries that held the public’s attention. As such, several series have emerged as prequels or sequels to “The Walking Dead”, bringing more explanations to the fictional universe.

Fear the Walking Dead” was the first series derived from “The Walking Dead” to appear, in 2013, and it is a prequel that follows the beginning of the apocalypse, at a time when the government is trying to quarantine several cities in the United States. Interestingly, the production ends up having some crossovers with the original series, continuing the stories of some characters. Already “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” works as a sequel, following the first generation of children who are born in a post-apocalyptic world and who are trained to survive a zombie infestation.

A third series based on the universe of “The Walking Dead” will hit the small screen in 2022. It’s called “Tales of The Walking Dead” and each episode is dedicated to further exploring the individual stories of different characters in the series. More recently, in 2023, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon“, a production dedicated to the character played by Norman Reedus and how he managed to survive the apocalyptic world. According to some previously released information, a feature film focused on the universe of “The Walking Dead” is also in the production phase.
