12 Anime Films That Earned Over 1 Billion Yen in 2023

At a conference on January 30th, Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPA), an industry organization comprised of the four leading film production and distribution companies Shochiku, Toho, Toei It is Kadokawa Picturesrevealed financial results for fiscal year 2023.

We now know that in 2023 they will premiere in cinemas in Japan 1,232 films (676 Japanese films and 556 foreign films), representing a total annual box office gross of 221.482 billion yen (about 1.5 billion dollars). This was an increase of 3.9% compared to the previous year and the fifth highest record since 2000.

34 Japanese films grossed one billion yen in box office gross last year, eight more than the previous year. That includes 12 anime films and ten live-action film adaptations of manga.

The anime film that earned the most in Japan in 2023 was THE FIRST SLAM DUNK with 15.87 billion yen, in second place Detective Conan Black Iron Submarine (13.88 billion yen) and third The Boy and the Heron (8.84 billion yen).

With animation by Toei Animationthe direction of The First Slam Dunkthe 3D CG anime film based on the basketball manga slam dunk in (Vagabond, REAL), is from and we have the presence of the character designer / animation director Yasuyuki Ebara (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) and technical directors Katsuhiko Kitada (Attack on Titan episodes), Naoki Miyahara (Digimon Adventure, Popin Q), Toshio Ōhashi (LayereD Stories 0) and Yū Kamatani (Looking for Magical DoReMi, Precure Super Stars). The sound is the responsibility of Yota Tsuruoka.

In the manga description we can read:

slam dunk It began to be published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1996 and ended with 31 volumes. The work inspired a 101-episode anime series in 1993 and was followed by 4 anime films.
