Eiichiro Odathe creator of One Piecerevealed what motivated the 2-year time jump in history. Oda stated:

At 17 years old, Luffy had no way of defeating a strong enemy like Yonko. That’s why we needed two years. This is so that Luffy’s growth is complemented by imagination. The reason I chose two years was because I didn’t want to make Luffy so adult.

Eiichiro Oda began serializing the manga One Piece in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump on July 19, 1997.

The franchise has inspired multiple adaptations for other media, the main one being the anime that has been running since October 1999 and whose production is in charge of the studios Toei Animation since then. A successful live-action series premiered last year on Netflix.
