PS5 Portable: Finally! It’s really going to happen!

It’s no big news to say that I’m not the biggest fan of PlayStation Portal, Sony’s recently launched streaming device, which pretends to be a portable console, but isn’t really a portable console.

However, I have to point out that the issue here is not that the product itself is bad, which it is not.

The PlayStation Portal is a product that works, and that actually fulfills the mission that Sony has put in front of it very well, especially if you have a good Internet connection to really enjoy streaming.

My problem with Sony’s choices is the missed opportunity!

However, it seems that someone has been reading everything I’ve been writing in 2023. After all, new rumors and leaks point to a Sony ready to develop a new portable console, which this time won’t pretend anything, and which will be capable to play all PS5 and PS4 titles.

Case to say… Finally!

PS5 Portable: Finally! It’s really going to happen!

PlayStation Portal

Therefore, at the time of the launch of PlayStation Portal, I stated that the console should actually be a Portable PS5, a little in the style of what Microsoft had done with its most recent generation of Xbox consoles.

More specifically, the PlayStation 5 would continue to be the standout console, as is the case with the Xbox Series X, while the portable console would serve as an Xbox Series S.

This would mean that the PS5 Portable would be more limited in terms of resolution and framerate, however, it would be able to play all games released for the PS5 and PS4, at least in Full HD and at 60Hz. All of this “offline”, with all processing happening on the console itself.

Well… I would pay to have this console! This is even if there were no games created from scratch for this PS5 Portable.

Well, Sony seems to have been attentive to all the feedback from the community, and as such, it is even forming a new partnership with AMD to create a system very similar to this one.

However, we still have a long way to go…

Apparently, Sony is actually working on a new PlayStation Portable console.

However, in addition to there being no plans to call this console the PSP 2 or PSVita 2, it will most likely not be an independent console. It seems that the hardware will only hit the market when the PS6 is already a reality, with the possibility that it will be launched at the same time as Sony’s new “home” console, in 2026 or 2027.

In a very concrete way, this console will be able to play the vast majority of PS5 games, as well as all PS4 games. However, on the PS6 side, it is very likely that this console will also serve as a successor to the current PlayStation Portal… In other words… Only and only via Streaming.

First of all, what do you think about this console? Did you buy it? Even if it only comes out in 2026 or 2027? Share your opinion with us in the comments box below.
