The year is almost over! 2023 brought several great films to cinemas and streaming platforms. To end on a high note, you can’t miss these films.
2023 was a year full of great films – “Barbie“, “Oppenheimer“, “Super Mario Bros The Movie“, “The creator“, “Gran Turismo“, “Flower Moon Assassins“, “Mission: Impossible Reckoning – Part One“, “The Equalizer 3“, “Napoleon“, “Indiana Jones and the Mark of Destiny“, among many others. In other words, with these great films, the race for the Oscars in the next edition will be truly crazy (a good one).
Streaming platforms also continue to invest heavily, in addition to the series, several interesting films were also produced – “Conductor” (Netflix), “The Killer” (Netflix), among others. As the year comes to an end, remember some of the best films that arrived in December to the best streaming platforms!
BLOOD DIAMOND (NETFLIX)
One of the best films of Leonardo DiCaprio“Blood diamond” shows the political and social instability that occurred in Sierra Leone for 11 years (1991-2002), due to a civil war. In this film we meet Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), who despite being Africans, have completely different lives, one is a former mercenary and the other is a fisherman. Despite their differences, they end up joining together in the search for a rare pink diamond capable of changing their lives.
One of the best films of this century and one of the best of 2006. It was nominated in five categories at the Oscars, with emphasis on Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) It is Best Supporting Actor (Djimon Hounsou). Alongside this incredible pair of actors was also Jennifer Connelly.
REBEL MOON – PART ONE: THE FIRE GIRL (NETFLIX)
From the hands of Zack Snyder The most expensive film of the year arrived on Netflix, ““Rebel Moon – Part One: The Fire Girl“. To complete this work, it took 166 million dollars, with much of it going towards special effects.
Despite being the most expensive film of the year and one of the most watched on Netflix, Zack Snyder’s film only managed a 24% rating on Netflix. Rotten Tomatoes. But not all criticism is bad. Andrea Zamora, from Sensacinewrites, “Rebel Moon has everything that Snyder is criticized for, but that doesn’t mean the end result is a tremendously entertaining film.”
CHICKEN ESCAPE: WE ARE DESTROYED (NETFLIX)
O return The 2000 stop motion classic with Ginger, Rocky, Babs, Bunty and the rest of the team has arrived on streaming! You Aardman studios teamed up with Netflix to bring the sequel to the smash hit “Chicken Run“. Despite being a nostalgic trip, left a lot to be desired.
For our editor Maggie Silva, “Chicken Run: We’re Fried” is fun enough to entertain the family during the holiday season, but not creative enough to justify its existence. The legacy of the original “Chicken Run” hangs over you. For new viewers, and in particular younger audiences, it may delight. For those who follow the work of the Aardmans and expected a strong return to the absurd and delicious universe of chickens fighting for freedom, you will only see brief glimpses of the film you saw in 2000.”
SALTBURN (PRIME VIDEO)
Prime Video brings second feature film by Emerald Fennell, “Saltburn.” A mind-blowing film starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike (“All for Your Good“), Richard E. Grant (“Loki“), Alison Oliver (“Conversations with Friends”), Archie Madekwe (“Gran Turismo“) It is Carey Mulligan (“Conductor“).
A chaotic film that deserves to be seen, whoever says so Maggie Silva, “Saltburn”, with Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, is inconsistent in all its eccentricity and is characterized by a chaotic, dizzying and hardly credible ending even within its own world. Nevertheless, it offers us a mind-boggling journey, full of unexpected moments and speeches capable of fueling media discourse for weeks. Even if it fails as a cohesive work, it still stands out as guilty pleasure.”
BARBIE (HBO MAX)
The most profitable film of 2020 has arrived on HBO Max – “Barbie”! The film has a cast full of sounding names – Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Michael Cera, among many others. Despite not being the first film made by Greta Gerwig, she brought to the world “Ladybird” (2017) and “Little women” (2019), the film about doll from the Mattel placed the director at the center of attentionthanks to a story full of social criticism.
A film led by Margot Robbie, protagonist and producer, who stood up to the producer of “Oppenheimer” – “We will not change our date. If you are afraid to face us, then change it yourselves.”
EVIL DEAD RISE – THE AWAKENING (HBO MAX)
2023 also marked the return of one of the best horror sagas ever, with “Evil Dead Rise – The Awakening”. The cast has Alyssa SutherlandLily Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Gabrielle Echols, Anna-Maree Thomas, Mirabai Pease and Jayden Daniels.
According to official synopsis, “tells the disturbing story of two sisters who grow apart over the years and whose reunion is interrupted by the awakening of demons, plunging into a fight for survival in which they are faced with a dark family reunion.” The legendary horror saga was created by Sam Raimi, which also marked his directorial debut. Bruce Campbell appears through a voice over recording.
