Filmmaker Oliver Stone has very strong opinions about the Hollywood industry, not sparing “Barbie” and Ryan Gosling in his criticisms.
Winner of four OscarsO film-maker Oliver Stone stands out for his work in works such as “Platoon – The Brave of the Platoon” (1986), “Born on the 4th of July” (1989) and “JFK” (1991). Admittedly political and controversial, Stone never leaves anything unsaid and in an interview with City AMdid not fail to comment on the state of the current film industry, sparing no criticism of “Furious speed”, “John Wick”, “Barbie” and even the actor Ryan Gosling.
For Stone, we are witnessing something he calls the “infantilization of Hollywood“, “Ryan Gosling you are wasting your time and you are doing it for money. He should be involved in more serious films. He shouldn’t be part of this Hollywood infantilization. Now it’s all fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all war films: fantasy, fantasy” argues the veteran director.
However, Oliver Stone does not direct his criticism exclusively at the film Greta Gerwig and express their discontent with the direction taken by the “Fast and Furious” film series. The filmmaker confesses that although he has enjoyed them in the past, the works are increasingly unrealistic and resemble “films from Marvel“, “I mean, how many more collisions between cars are we capable of seeing?”.
Another popular action series that has not escaped criticism from this legendary figure of American cinema is “John Wick”, in particular his fourth chapter released in theaters in March 2023. About the film directed by Chad Stahelski (“John Wick 3: Relentless“), Oliver Stone says ““On the plane I saw “John Wick”, which lasts three hours and more. And I fell asleep about 778 times during that (…) I kept waking up and having to face him killing more people. It’s as if the world has degenerated with a lack of logic.”
Away from fiction since “Snowden”, Oliver Stone has focused on documentaries about political issues. His most recent film “Nuclear Now” premiered out of competition at Venice festival in 2022 and argues that nuclear energy is a necessary solution to combat climate change.
In Greta Gerwig’s new film, we meet Barbie (Margot Robbie) who lives on his land with his Ken (Gosling), surrounded by several other Barbies. Everything goes well until the day she begins to feel changes in the perfection of her life. It is then that she heads to the real world, where she crosses paths with employees of the Mattelthe toy brand that created it and everything will take on a different shape.
In addition to the protagonist duo, “Barbie” also has America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell and many others in its vast cast.
