Social media app Threads by Meta has introduced a recent update. Now, users can view search results in reverse chronological order. This means that the application will show the most recent publications first and then the oldest ones.

Threads: the new social network has an important update!

This feature comes as a surprise, as the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, initially rejected the idea of chronological ordering. In December 2023, a user asked Mosseri if search results on Threads could be ordered chronologically.

To this, Mosseri responded that the order could lead to more spam on the platform. Users could abuse search results by spamming messages in search. Furthermore, if the platform tried to filter these messages, it could be accused of censorship.

However, today, the 9To5Mac reported and confirmed that Threads added reverse chronological order.

Now, with the filter, users can see the most recent posts in the search results. This also applies to posts that are in tags. The ‘tags’ function was also a recent addition to the platform that is similar to hashtags on Instagram or X. However, it comes without the ‘hash’ symbol and is limited to one tag per post.

To access the reverse chronological filter, users must update their Threads app.

Then, when they’re searching for a keyword or browsing tagged posts, they’ll see a three-dot button at the top of the screen.

After clicking that button, users can select the “Top” and “Most Recent” options to sort their messages in reverse chronological order.

This setting will also apply to other search features. So, if a user has applied the filter to messages in the search, the search results will also show the most recent messages first.

Unfortunately for users of Android, the capability is only accessible to iOS users at this time. However, this will reach everyone.

We tested this function on iOS but we don’t have it yet. As such, distribution may be being phased. This is despite having received a new update.
