Ridley Scott returned to theaters with “Napoleon”. Regarding the new film, we remember the director’s best films.
Ridley Scott, at 85 years old, is one of the most important directors in the history of cinema.
The iconic filmmaker has an impressive filmography with varied successes – “Gladiator”, “Blade Runner”, “The Last Duel”, “1492”, “American gangster“, among many others.
In total, throughout his more than 60-year career, Ridley Scott received four nominations for Oscars – three in the Best Director category and one in the Best Film category.
With his latest film on display, “Napoleão”, the director may receive a new nomination. Recently in an interview with The New Yorker, the British director spoke about the possibility of taking home the much-desired golden statuette – “you know, I haven’t won an Oscar yet. And if I win one, I’ll say, it’s about time! (“About feckin’ time!”).
The film’s protagonist, Joaquin Phoenix, appears to be well on his way to joining the restricted group of nominees for Best Leading Actor, while Ridley Scott continues to defend himself against reviews. 19) GUCCI’S HOUSE
Finally, the biographical film about one of the biggest families in fashion. The cast has Lady Gaga, Adam DriverAl Pacino, among others but still came in last place.
The story leaves several holes and loose ends. Lady Gaga takes the film “on his shoulders”, with an Oscar-worthy performance.
18) EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS
Ridley Scott brought us an epic version of the life of Moses, one of the most important biblical figures.
However, it was one of the worst rated films in the Rotten Tomatoes – 30% for specialized critics and 35% for the public. Having a luxury cast is not always enough.
17) ALIEN: COVENANT
Another film from the “Alien” saga but this time at the end of the list. Starring Michael Fassbenderthis film was a disaster among the public, with only 55% in the Rotten Tomatoes.
Mike Massie of Gone With The Twinssays “erases much of the terror, most of the mystery and all of the logic behind the mix that once provoked nightmares.”
16) THE DUELLISTS
It seems that the “bug” about Napoleon is not new. In 1977, the director brought us “The Duellists”, a film that follows two officers of the infamous emperor. But it doesn’t follow the incredible battles that Napoleon fought but rather a series of duels between the two officers.
15) HANNIBAL
It’s not as beautiful as “Silence of the innocents”, by Jonathan Demme, but Anthony Hopkins He does his best to once again embody the role of the infamous psychologist.
14) ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
It was a financial failure, “All the Money in the World” barely managed to offset production costs.
Despite this, it remains an excellent film based on true events. In 1973, J. Paul Getty’s grandson is kidnapped and, to release him, criminals demand 17 million dollars. The problem is that the grandfather does not accept the kidnappers’ demands.
13) BLACK HAWK DOWN
A war film that keeps us on the screen from start to finish. According to the official synopsis, the film tells the story of “a team of American soldiers sent to Somalia to capture two lieutenants of a Somali general who has a price on his head. The operation, which should have lasted just 30 minutes, turned into a desperate and bloody battle against Somali troops, causing the massacre of 18 Americans (and injuries to 73 more) and the death of a thousand Somalis.”
12) KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
This film is part of the legendary crusades of the 12th century, which in itself requires a longer film so that the story can be told effectively, the same thing that is happening with “Napoleon”.
This film received a new edition with another 50 minutes of story, once again deserving our full attention.

When talking about “1492”, the opinion is never consensual. But we all agreed that the soundtrack created by Vangelis It is a true masterpiece!
10) AMERICAN GANGSTER
Starring Denzel Washington, this film tells the story of, according to the official synopsis, “Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), the discreet black driver for one of the main bosses of organized crime in Harlem. But when the boss suddenly dies, Frank takes advantage of the empty space to build his own empire and build his own vision of the American dream. In international criticism, the opinion of Christian Toto, from Washington Times, “American Gangster delivers quality drama, gripping performances and a dizzying morality tale. But it should have been much, much better.”
9) NAPOLEON
It premiered a week ago and has already entered the list of the director’s 10 best films. Although there are many criticisms surrounding the historical veracity of the film, “Napoleon” goes on the back of the incredible performance of Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the infamous emperor.
8) ROBIN HOOD
Ridley Scott brought a new vision to the most honest thief in human history. With a captivating story and a perfect mix of action, intrigue and fun, “Robin Hood” managed to enter the top 10.
7) THELMA & LOUISE
It’s not Ridley Scott’s best-known film, but the various nominations and awards make up for its lack of popularity. This film won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and was nominated in five other categories. Furthermore, it was in this film that Brad Pitt got his first big film role.
Much of the international criticism highlights the chemistry between the two protagonists, Susan Sarandon It is Geena Davis. 6) THE LAST DUEL
Ridley Scott has a clear penchant for two themes – science fiction and historical/biographical. In this 2021 film, the iconic director tells a true story from several points of view.
“The Last Duel” recreates a true event between the knight Jean de Carrouges and the squire Jaques Le Gris. When Le Gris is accused of having raped Marguerite, Carrouges’ wife, Charles VI, King of France, agrees that the best way to resolve the issue is to organize a duel to the death between the two. For Carrouges, it is not just her honor that is at stake, as Marguerite, after being judged and humiliated by everyone, risks being burned alive by those who doubt her word.”, can be read in the official synopsis.
In the end we have an excellent film about the event from the point of view of the victim, the accused and the accuser.
5) LOST ON MARS
Another science fiction film but this time about one of the greatest space curiosities – what would it be like to live on Mars?
Matt Damon He had the difficult role of spending much of his time alone with his own company. Still, we were fascinated by the whole story. In fact, “The Martian” was nominated for the Oscar for Best Film.
4) BLADE RUNNER
Another great work of science fiction and it would be (almost) a crime not to be in the top 10!
Starring Harrison Ford, “Blade Runner” takes place, according to the official synopsis, “in the year 2019 where there is a class of androids called “Replicants” in every way similar to Man, except for the time of existence which is very short. Six of these “Replicants” took over a space shuttle between Earth and colonies on other planets and are on the loose in Los Angeles. The police chief summons Rick Deckard, a former Blade Runner, the name by which special agents tasked with eliminating dangerous or uncontrollable “Replicants” are known, and tasks him with locating and destroying the six escaping units.”
3) GLADIATOR
Arguably one of Ridley Scott’s best films. The story, the soundtrack, the great performance of Russell Crowethe perfect recipe to make this film a masterpiece.
Furthermore, this film contains one of the best scenes ever (and which was completely improvised), Maximus’ iconic walk to reunite with his family in afterlife.
2) PROMETHEUS
For many, the most obvious choice would be “Blade Runner” and/or “Gladiator” in second position but not for us! There is another film that deserves this place – “Prometheus”.
This 2012 film features a luxury cast – Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, between others. “Prometheus” is part of the “Alien” saga and tells the story of a tribulation in search of the origin of humanity.
1) ALIEN – THE 8TH PASSENGER
One of the most important films in the history of science fiction. With “Alien – The 8th Passenger”, Ridley Scott began a saga that continues today, both in cinema and in the gaming area. In the review aggregator Rotten TomatoesRidley Scott’s film achieved an almost perfect rating – 94% out of 100%.
David Denby, from New York Magazine, writes, “Alien, like the Exorcist, plays on our nerves and emotions like the experienced hand of a torturer extracting a confession. The film is terrifying, but not in a way that is remotely enjoyable.” Like international critics, our number one choice also fell on this film!
