Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest filmmakers of contemporary cinema, being one of the rare cases that manages to captivate audiences and critics with big-budget works and artistic ambitions to admire.
Famous for his taste for spectacle and a highly epic scope, Christopher Nolan brings a CV of enormous prestige including works such as the trilogy “Batman”, “The origin”, “Interstellar” or “Dunkirk“. Now, Christopher Nolan’s name is back to being more popular than ever thanks to the triumph of “Oppenheimer”.
The biographical epic about J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the controversial figure who became known as the “father of the atomic bomb”, is considered one of the best of 2023 and achieved an impressive result at the international box office. Christopher Nolan has already received a Golden Globe it is a Critics’ Choice for his work as director of the work. The same is expected to happen at other awards shows, including the Oscars where “Oppenheimer” counts 13 nominations.
Like any good filmmaker, Nolan is above all a cinephileknowledgeable and appreciative of seventh Art who never stops paying attention to his surroundings and the better what is done in current cinema. Recently, in an interview with Teamthe filmmaker revealed his admiration for two works that are markedly intimate and have an inherent subtlety.
However, subtlety is not something that is in Christopher Nolan’s plans for the future, “I feel attracted to working on a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity is to mobilize these resources (..) I know there are so many filmmakers in the world who would give anything to have the resources I have gathered, and I feel I have a responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.” When asked about his recent favorites, Nolan didn’t hesitate to point out “Aftersun” (2022), by Charlotte Wells It is “Past lives” (2023), by Celine Song. For the filmmaker, we are faced with two films that he considers very “beautiful” in a subtle way.
“Aftersun” is a drama that finds Sophie (Frankie Corio) reflecting on the joy and melancholy of the holidays he spent with his father (Paul Mescal) 20 years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill in the gaps as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t know.
In turn, “Vidas Passadas” is nominated for two Oscars (Best movie It is Best Original Screenplay) and tells the story of Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two childhood friends with a deep connection, who are separated after Nora’s family migrates from South Korea. Two decades later, they meet again in New York during a fateful week, where they confront notions of destiny, love and the choices that make a life. This moving dramatic romance can be seen in Portuguese cinemas on February 8th
